2009 Le Cigare Volant Réserve 2009 Le Cigare Volant Réserve -- $75.00 -- $75.00 per bottle / $810.00 per case $63.75 per bottle / $720.00 per case (Members) Winemaking, like life, is a bit of a dream. One imagined (some years ago) that one might produce a sort of hommage to Châneauneuf-du-Pape, a Rhônish-style blend in California, and somehow, miraculously, the wine materialized in this terrestrial sphere; it has been, in balance, a more or less viable, ongoing proposition. Over the years, I’ve had my ups and doons with the southern Rhône’s most well known appellation. In general, I’ve not been so crazy about its escalating levels of over-extraction and ripeness, seemingly in commercial call and response to its most avid Marylandian partisan. With the exception of the redoubtable Château Rayas, I find that I can, at this juncture, largely take or leave C-du-P. But, possibly more to the point, I’ve come to realize that everything in my winemaking world has really been a displacement of my deep, secret desire to produce pinot noir, or more accurately, red . . .

2011 Syrah/Viognier "Black & White & Red All Over" ~ November DEWN Release 2011 Syrah/Viognier "Black & White & Red All Over" ~ November DEWN Release -- $25.00 -- $25.00 per bottle / $270.00 per case $21.25 per bottle / $240.00 per case (Members) Call it a conceit of antiquity that once the soul of the Platonic Grape enjoyed a mystical unity of self-sufficiency, but through unfortunate circumstance, that completeness or integrity was tragically lost. Imagine that the soul of every Red Grape yearns for its missing part; perhaps it will find completion in the embrace of the very different Other—undoubtedly the soul of a White Grape. There is no question that Syrah and Viognier are true soul mates. Viognier adds an exotic fragrance to Syrah, helps to create a richer, softer mouthfeel and just makes for a more complete and satisfying taste experience. From longer-chain tannins to the Great Chain of Being, we are privileged to observe momentary glimpses of felicity and order. First nose is dark and brooding—something out of a Grimm’s fairy tale. Hmm, gingerbread? But also scents of blackberry, menthol, sarsaparilla and violets (from vio?) In the . . .

2012 A Proper Claret 750 mL ~ New Release! 2012 A Proper Claret 750 mL ~ New Release! -- $16.00 -- $16.00 per bottle / $172.80 per case $13.60 per bottle / $153.60 per case (Members) Some cautionary words: Bonny Doon Vineyard is, as we all know or should know, a strictly cabernet-free zone, at least it has been for the last twenty-eight years. The last “Claret” produced at Bonny Doon Vineyard was in 1985 from grapes grown at our late Estate in the eponymous hamlet of Bonny Doon. It was a blend of approximately equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab. Franc, Merlot and Malbec, and against all expectation, it was actually pretty damn good. Randall Grahm, owner and winemaker, has expressed opprobrium, occasionally bordering on amused disdain, for this popular grape variety. We are not really at liberty to say how Bonny Doon Vineyard has come to be entrusted with the distribution of a wine made from such improbably alien grape varieties, but suffice to say that the deal was doon grudgingly and harumphingly. So, with these caveats, the sentiment at Bonny Doon Vineyard is that . . .

2012 Chardonnay/Pinot Gris "Spanish Springs" ~ November DEWN Release 2012 Chardonnay/Pinot Gris "Spanish Springs" ~ November DEWN Release -- $35.00 -- $35.00 per bottle / $378.00 per case $29.75 per bottle / $336.00 per case (Members) Being a Chardon-nay-sayer is as easy as A,B, C, but one should never say never (or Nevers) again. So, let’s get this straight: We are neither big fans of Chard, either in an over-oaked or overwrought style. This is a single vineyard bottling of Chard (o, nay!), yes, and Pinot Gris, yes, harvested ensemble from the litorally proximal and hyper cool Spanish Springs vineyard and then co-fermented. This is a wine for very patient acid-freaks, if that is not a gross contradiction in terms. A great expression of earthiness, creamy toastiness, very firm acidity and the lovely mineral tones for which we live. Discreet suggestions of pineapple, lime blossom and other unnamed citrus in the nose. This wine has been bottled without filtration and therefore may be partly cloudy with an occasional chance of precipitation. Vital Statistics: Blend: 54% chardonnay, 46% pinot gris Alcohol by Volume: 14.5% Appellation: . . .

2012 Pinot Noir "Spanish Springs" ~ November DEWN Release 2012 Pinot Noir "Spanish Springs" ~ November DEWN Release -- $40.00 -- $40.00 per bottle / $432.00 per case $34.00 per bottle / $384.00 per case (Members) The genius of Pinot Noir has often been celebrated; Pinot Pilgrims are always kneeling bareheaded in one vineyard or another. Maybe Pinot’s genius is the one of the polymorphous perverse shape-shifter, the Peter Sellers of cépages. The ’12 is all about elegance and finesse; if one were to compare it to a Burgundy it would be Savigny-lès-Beaune or Monthelie. In the nose, wild strawberry, mint, white pepper, anise and allspice. In the mouth, strawberry-rhubarb and beetroot, which is one of the fail-safe signifiers of Pinosity. This is a more delicate expression of Pinot, but one that is incredibly true to Pinot’s Platonic essence. An excellent match for brined turkey, grilled duck breast, goat cheese ravioli with wild mushrooms, and root vegetable hash. Vital Statistics: Varietal: 100% pinot noir Alcohol by Volume: 12.7% Appellation: San Luis Obispo County TA: 5.9 g/L pH: 3.2 Serving Temp: 58º . . .
